Organized counterfeit networks now use global marketplaces to sell fake goods that appear identical to genuine products, eroding consumer trust and causing downstream losses across industries. The scale is significant — the 2025 USTR Notorious Markets List identifies 37 online markets and 32 physical markets reported to facilitate substantial trademark counterfeiting or copyright piracy.

For brand protection teams, the challenge is not only legal, but also technical. Monitoring at scale means automated collection across Amazon, Temu, AliExpress, Shopee, and social commerce platforms simultaneously — and doing it in a way that returns accurate, region-specific data rather than a sanitized view served to a foreign IP.

Brand protection monitoring pipeline

In other words, teams must monitor dozens of marketplaces across multiple regions, continuously, without getting blocked or receiving incomplete data.

Why Geo-Targeting Is Non-Negotiable

Counterfeit listings don’t distribute evenly across markets. They surface first in regions with lower enforcement pressure — platforms like Shopee show high counterfeit visibility in markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, with inconsistent enforcement outcomes. A monitoring pipeline pulling all data through a single IP origin will miss these regional listings or see a version of the page that doesn’t reflect what a local buyer sees.

Geo-targeted requests fix this. By routing collection through a residential proxy pool with city-level targeting, teams can query the same product search from Jakarta, São Paulo, or Istanbul and get results that match the local marketplace surface — including listings that sellers deliberately localize to avoid detection in their primary markets. Counterfeit sellers tend to remove the legitimate brand’s name from listings, making detection without direct local access significantly harder.

Structure the Monitoring Pipeline

Most brand protection pipelines handle three distinct collection patterns, each requiring a different proxy configuration:

Continuous monitoring: Low-frequency rotation cadence — one request per IP, rotating per session to avoid fingerprinting. Pool diversity matters more than speed here.

Spot checks and takedown verification: Triggered by an alert, these need city-level or ASN-level targeting to hit the specific regional marketplace node that served the original listing. Per-request rotation works best.

Seller network mapping: Pulling a confirmed counterfeit seller’s full catalog benefits from sticky sessions to maintain browsing context across a multi-page workflow.

Most production setups separate these jobs by type instead of trying to optimize a single proxy configuration for all three.

What Marketplaces Actually Check For

The platforms with the highest counterfeit volumes apply the most aggressive bot detection. Beyond rate limiting, major marketplaces examine header patterns, TLS fingerprints, and the ASN reputation of the originating IP. Datacenter IPs fail quickly — their ASNs are catalogued by commercial cloud providers, and blocklists against these ranges have been building for years.

A residential IP carries the ASN of a legitimate ISP, the same signal a real buyer browsing from that city produces. That’s why block rates drop materially when teams switch from datacenter to residential pools for marketplace monitoring.

Chinese online marketplaces Temu, AliExpress, and SHEIN have become central actors in the global counterfeit economy — and all three apply bot detection that targets high-request-rate patterns from shared IP ranges. Pulling data through a US IP also returns a different version of the page than a local one, potentially missing regionally localized listings entirely.

The Cost Structure That Fits This Use Case

Brand protection monitoring is variable by nature; it is heavy during product launches or audit cycles, lighter during steady-state periods. Fixed monthly proxy allocations don’t fit this pattern well: teams either overbuy for peak periods or lose data continuity when they underbuy.

A team running continuous monitoring across five markets with quarterly audit spikes has genuinely different bandwidth needs month to month — and a billing model that penalizes that variability adds friction that has nothing to do with enforcement quality.

Pay-per-GB pricing with non-expiring traffic aligns directly with how this work runs. Teams can scale up during a counterfeit spike in a new market, then pull back without losing unused allocation.

The global online brand protection software market was valued at around $2.68 billion back in 2024 and is projected to reach $8.82 billion by 2035. The teams operating at that scale are the ones who got the data collection layer right first because enforcement is only as reliable as the pipeline feeding it.
