Areeba: Hi Basilis, It’s a pleasure to connect with you. Before we dive into the details, could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you found your way into the exciting world of technology and product leadership?

Basilis: Thank you! It’s great to be here.

My journey into technology and product leadership wasn’t a straight path. I started CreativeG primarily out of necessity—I needed to make money. But as I dove deeper into the world of WordPress and digital product development, I found that I genuinely enjoyed the process of building things, solving problems, and helping businesses grow.

Over time, what began as a means to an end turned into a passion. I realized that my ability to quickly identify opportunities and create solutions could drive significant impact. This led me to focus on product management and growth strategies, not just for my projects but also for others looking to scale their businesses.

Areeba: As a people-first business and product leader, how do you prioritize building a healthy team culture while also driving product innovation and business growth?

Basilis: Building a healthy team culture is essential for driving innovation and growth. I believe in creating an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute ideas and take ownership of their work. This means fostering open communication, encouraging creativity, and providing the tools and resources needed for the team to succeed.

At CreativeG, I focus on balancing autonomy with accountability, giving my team the freedom to explore new ideas while ensuring that we all stay aligned with our goals. I also believe that innovation stems from a diverse team with different perspectives, so I make it a priority to build a team that brings varied experiences and skills to the table.

Areeba: How do you use user research to create products that resonate with users, and what role does it play in your product development process?

Basilis: User research is the cornerstone of our product development process. It helps us understand the real needs, pain points, and desires of our users. We start by conducting thorough research—this includes surveys, interviews, and analyzing user behavior data. This research informs every stage of the product lifecycle, from ideation to execution.

By grounding our decisions in data and direct user feedback, we ensure that our products not only solve the right problems but also deliver an experience that resonates with our users. In essence, user research allows us to build products that people genuinely want to use, which is crucial for long-term success.

Areeba: Can you discuss your approach to product management, from defining product strategy to execution and delivery, especially in the context of building sustainable product-led businesses?

Basilis: My approach to product management is all about clarity and execution. It starts with defining a clear product strategy that aligns with the overall business objectives.

This involves identifying the market opportunity, understanding the competitive landscape, and setting measurable goals. Once the strategy is in place, it’s about execution—breaking down the strategy into actionable steps, assigning roles, and maintaining a relentless focus on delivery.

I believe in an iterative approach, where we continuously learn from each release, gather feedback, and make improvements. Sustainability comes from building a product that not only meets the current market demand but is also adaptable and scalable for future growth. This requires constant monitoring of market trends and being willing to pivot when necessary.

Areeba: In your experience, how does effective product design contribute to the success of technology products, and what methodologies do you employ to ensure a user-centric approach?

Basilis: Effective product design is critical—it’s what differentiates a good product from a great one. Good design makes a product intuitive, accessible, and enjoyable to use. I employ methodologies like Design Thinking and Lean UX to ensure that our products are user-centric from the get-go.

This involves iterative design sprints, where we prototype, test, and refine the product based on user feedback. We also focus heavily on usability testing to catch any potential issues before the product goes live. The goal is to create a seamless experience that not only meets user needs but also delights them, which is key to product success.

Areeba: You facilitated NinjaOutreach’s successful exit together with growing its monthly recurring revenue (MRR) significantly. Can you share the key initiatives or decisions that led to this success?

Basilis: Facilitating NinjaOutreach’s growth and successful exit was all about focusing on the right opportunities at the right time. One key initiative was optimizing our sales funnel to better target high-value customers, which directly increased MRR.

We also invested heavily in content marketing and SEO, which significantly boosted our organic traffic and lead generation. Another critical decision was to continually iterate on the product based on user feedback, ensuring that it stayed relevant and valuable to our customers. Finally, building strong relationships with our customers and partners helped us maintain a competitive edge and positioned us well for the eventual exit.

Areeba: Could you share a specific example of a challenging product development or management situation you faced and how you navigated it to achieve a positive outcome?

Basilis: Certainly! One challenging situation I encountered was when we were building a product intended to scale rapidly across multiple markets. The challenge was twofold: managing the complexity of developing a scalable architecture while also ensuring that the product remained adaptable to different user needs and market conditions.

Initially, we faced significant hurdles in defining a product architecture that could handle a high volume of users without compromising performance. Our early prototypes struggled with scalability, leading to slow load times and a subpar user experience. To navigate this, we had to go back to the drawing board and rethink our approach. We opted for a microservices architecture, which allowed us to decouple various components of the product. This made it easier to scale specific parts of the system as needed without affecting the entire product.

Additionally, we integrated robust monitoring tools to proactively identify performance bottlenecks and optimize them in real time. On the management side, keeping the team aligned with the vision was crucial. We implemented an agile workflow with frequent iterations, which helped us stay flexible and responsive to changes in user feedback and market demands.

Ultimately, this approach allowed us to launch a product that was not only scalable but also adaptable, leading to successful expansion into new markets without compromising user experience.

Areeba: You mentioned coaching and empowering teams to do their best work. What specific strategies or techniques do you use to foster a high-performing and motivated team?

Basilis: Empowering a team starts with trust and clear communication.

I make it a point to provide my team with clear goals and the autonomy to achieve them in their way. Regular check-ins are crucial—not just to track progress, but to offer support and feedback. I also believe in recognizing and celebrating successes, no matter how small, to keep morale high.

Additionally, I encourage continuous learning and development, offering resources for my team to improve their skills. This could be anything from online courses to attending industry conferences. By investing in their growth, I ensure that they remain motivated and are always bringing fresh ideas to the table.

Areeba: What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs or product managers looking to build and scale successful technology products and businesses?

Basilis:
My advice would be to stay curious and never stop learning. The tech industry evolves rapidly, and staying ahead requires continuous education. Don’t be afraid to experiment—some of the most successful products come from taking calculated risks.

Focus on understanding your users deeply; their feedback is invaluable in shaping your product. Also, build a strong network within the industry—relationships can open doors to opportunities and partnerships that might not be possible otherwise. Finally, be patient. Building and scaling a successful product takes time, persistence, and a lot of hard work.
